WHAT IS REFORMER PILATES?

Reformer Pilates uses a reformer machine to do a range of exercises that work the whole body, starting with the core. All Pilates classes should start with alignment and breathing, as well as core engagement. Joseph Pilates created Pilates, originally called Contrology, based on a set of principles that ensured efficiency, precision, and full-body integration. Over time, his exercises have been adapted to align with current exercise science, rehabilitation practices, and biomechanics research, making Pilates safer and more effective for a wider range of people.

Today, it is one of the most popular exercise modalities across the world. Reformer Pilates is a low-impact, full-body workout focusing on core strength, flexibility, balance, and coordination, however it can be modified to work for people with a variety of postural issues and injuries, as well as progressed to be a fantastic resistance workout. It involves precise movements, matching each breath to each movement to enable the practitioner to concentrate on how the exercises feel in their body, to enhance physical and mental wellness and awareness.

sally-anne mcconnell

Sally-Anne has been teaching Pilates for 20 years. She first discovered Pilates while training as a dancer, at the New Zealand School of Dance, in the 1990’s.

Towards the end of a 15 year career as a professional dancer, in 2005, she took her first pilates training course, a foundation mat work course, with Teri Lee Steele in New York City. This was quickly followed by supplementary courses in the use of Props such as the foam roller, and the Swiss Ball.

After the birth of her first daughter, Sally-Anne moved to London, and enrolled in a full time, 1 year, comprehensive training with Alan Herdman, of Alan Herdman Pilates. This course covered all types of equipment (reformer, Cadillac, wunda chair, Ladder Barrel and step barrel, as well as mat work and all small equipment), with a focus on rehabilitation and injury prevention, and including pre and post natal pilates. Alongside Alan’s teaching, anatomy lessons were delivered by the late great physiotherapist, Shirley Hancock.

Sally-Anne’s teaching style is gentle, but always with an emphasis on correct technique and alignment, meaning that gentle doesn’t mean not working hard.

abigail mclachlan

Abby is owner of East of Eden, a studio that has been running for 10 years, with mat Pilates for the full 10 years and reformer Pilates for 9 years. She qualified with Stott reformer Pilates in 2018, and has been teaching group classes and privates at East of Eden ever since.
